manuka oval master plan

BACKGROUND

There are several reasons for preparing a master plan for Manuka Oval at this time:

  • The existing facilities are ageing and need upgrading.  The turf sub-surface is original and requires replacing.  There is a need for new or upgraded facilities including cricket media facilities, corporate facilities, catering facilities, lighting, scoreboard, entry gates and environmental systems.
  • A greater number of permanent seats are required to meet the growing requirements of sporting codes.
  • The needs of AFL to attract future AFL matches to Canberra including a possible connection to Canberra for the proposed Western Sydney team should be included in future planning for the facility.
  • As part of the upcoming Centenary celebrations of Canberra as Australia’s capital in 2013, the venue may host a number of key events including a possible Cricket Test match.
  • Transport issues, including the lack of parking in the immediate surrounding area on match days is significant.
  • Planning for the future development of the Manuka Oval should also take account of the other uses in the area enclosed by Manuka Circle.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the master plan are to:

  • Implement the Government’s objectives in ‘Growing Canberra’s Future and Improved Sport and Recreation Opportunities’
  • Increase the appeal of Manuka Oval as a broad-based entertainment venue and business centre
  • Create attractive, safe, and functional facilities
  • Increase the efficiency and viability of Manuka Oval
