SPORTS LIGHTING
Introduction
Manuka Oval is the premier venue for AFL and cricket in the ACT.
The ACT Government is currently undertaking design studies for the possible future upgrading of the Oval and the surrounding area. These studies follow-on from community consultations about options for the future development of the Oval undertaken in 2009. During the 2009 consultations, the community indicated that the Oval was highly valued and should be retained as the main venue for cricket and AFL.
As the first action to ensure that Manuka Oval remains an attractive venue for first class sporting events, it is proposed to install television broadcast quality lights. Other proposals to upgrade the oval and surrounding area are currently being developed and will be the subject of separate consultation with the community.
The Prime Minister, Ms Julia Gillard MP, announced on 28 April 2012 that the Federal Government would contribute $2.5 million towards the installation of broadcast lighting at Manuka Oval. The ACT Minister for Sport, Mr Andrew Barr MLA, announced at the same time that the ACT Government would contribute a similar amount towards the lighting.
